Bringing statues to life: Voltaire
1694-1778
François-Marie Arouet used the nom de plume ‘Voltaire’ to publish his plays, poems and essays, and more than 20,000 letters as well as 2,000 books and pamphlets.
His best known satirical work, Candide, introduced the world to Dr Pangloss, for whom “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds”.
