Bringing statues to life: Oliver Cromwell
1599-1658
English general and statesman. One of the signatories of Charles I’s death warrant, he served as Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland (Wales was at that time part of England).
He was buried in Westminster Abbey, but when the Royalists returned Charles II to power in 1660 they had Cromwell’s corpse dug up, hung in chains and beheaded.
