Bringing statues to life: Napoleon Bonaparte
1769-1821
The French statesman rose to prominence during the Revolution, and declared himself Emperor in 1804. Born in Corsica, his parents were Italian.
He married Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie, six years his senior, after her first husband was guillotined; she was known as Rose, a name Napoleon disliked, so he renamed her Joséphine.
